About the role

All progress begins with pioneers. At Rio Tinto, it begins with you.

We are looking for a Data Engineer to join our Exploration Data Science Team to develop insights on where in the world we should explore and help us discover better deposits faster. Working as part of a regional team within the global Rio Tinto Exploration (RTX), you will enable data integration, remove silos, connect workflows and conduct general data wrangling of complex datasets.

This is a great opportunity for a data engineer to work at the forefront of technology in a diverse and rapidly evolving field. We have a rich and rapidly growing repository of data to help map, prioritize and test the best minerals targets around the globe - from surface geochemistry, airborne geophysics, satellite remote sensing and drillhole spectral scanning data, to social and environmental data. This role is key to the future of our business.

We are an open, connected global team that includes some of the industry’s best and brightest minds. We offer competitive, performance-focused remuneration and a wide range of benefits to reward your contribution. With a global reach, the opportunities to develop and grow your career are broad and exciting.

Reporting to the Exploration Data Science Regional Lead for Australasia, and working in a challenging and exciting environment, you will be:

  • Design, build and maintain cloud-first data architecture solutions that enable us to deliver valuable machine learning workflows and insights.
  • Connecting data and workflows to help remove silos, improve efficiencies and deliver new insights
  • Improving decision-making through collecting, aggregating, and analysing data from multiple diverse sources.
  • Utilising the latest available technologies to flexibly manage and scale data pipelines and analytics models.
  • Developing software solutions to support data science
  • Utilising machine learning to combine data and automate workflows
  • Build & maintain cloud infrastructure
  • Fostering an innovative and “disruptive” technology culture to identify and drive value-creating opportunities
  • Inspiring, coaching and mentoring the Rio Tinto Exploration community.

What you will bring

  • Commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
  • Qualification in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Machine Learning, or a related field
  • Proficiency in exploring and manipulating large datasets through applications or programming interfaces
  • Demonstrated experience preparing data for Data Science and Machine Learning using heavy industry data sets (structured and unstructured)
  • Ability to write and optimise SQL queries and create efficient data extract/transform/ load (ETL) programs and tasks.
  • Cloud based solution design using containerisation and serverless architectures in AWS and/or Azure (Cloud Formation/ARM)
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to diagnose and logically resolve technical problems
  • Proficiency in SQL, Python, R, Linux (Bash)
  • Software engineering and Agile development experience desirable
  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team

What we offer

  • A safety-focused and inclusive working environment
  • A competitive salary package with annual cash incentive awards (STIP)
  • Access to top tier family-friendly health and medical programs
  • Excellent retirement plan
  • A comprehensive leave policy that covers all moments that matter in life (vacation/annual, paid parental leave, short term sick leave, paid holidays)
  • Ongoing individual wellbeing support for you and your family for personal and professional matters
  • Generous Rio Tinto employee share program

About Rio Tinto

At Rio Tinto Exploration, we are investing in growth for the future – starting with the exploration for new sources of essential materials. Our talented team of explorers are constantly searching the world, seeking to create value for the business by discovering and acquiring economically, socially and environmentally sustainable resources. We have 63 programmes in eight commodities across 16 countries.

We’re focused on fast-tracking technologies, data and using analytical insights to unlock value and improve the effectiveness and efficiency at every stage of the exploration process. We’re looking for a diverse team of leaders in technology and data science experts to drive our technology strategy and create viable discovery opportunities for Rio Tinto.
